ISEA2000, c'est d'abord le plaisir et l'honneur d'accueillir à Paris des artistes et des intellectuels du monde entier réunis autour de la création. Cette année, pour le dixième anniversaire de cette manifestation, ISEA est placé sous le signe de la «révélation». Ce mot est pour moi riche d'évocations. Nous attendrons donc des révélations, des surprises, des rencontres entre les talents, nouveaux ou déjà plus anciens et nous espérons que ce lieu d'échange saura répondre aux multiples attentes de tous les participants.
En dix ans, les technologies numériques ont connu un développement important. Elles font et feront partie toujours davantage de notre vie quotidienne. Il ne sera pas rendu compte, ici, à Paris, de ces technologies dans leur future banalité mais de la rencontre, jamais banale, entre les artistes et ces technologies. Peu importe le nom que l'on donne aujourd'hui à cette création, peu importe qu'elle soit électronique, numérique ou multimédia. Ce qui est certain, c'est qu'elle entre entièrement dans le champ de l'expression artistique.
Je trouve tout particulièrement passionnant que ces nouvelles aventures touchent et mêlent parfois l'ensemble des disciplines artistiques. Cette proximité de l'image numérique et du son numérique provoque de nouvelles formes et suscite de nouvelles esthétiques. Une fois encore, les artistes sont aux avant-postes de l'expérimentation et de l'innovation. Certes, l'expérimentation et la recherche sont étroitement liées à toute pratique artistique, mais ce lien semble encore plus fort lorsqu'il s'agit de création technologique. C'est la mission de mon ministère de favoriser et d'accompagner l'émergence de ces nouveaux territoires de l'imaginaire. Je m'attacherai à ce que les créateurs soient mieux compris, mieux accueillis, mieux soutenus dans leurs projets.
ISEA2000 est l'une des occasions offerte aux professionnels et au public de rencontrer un grand nombre d'acteurs, français et internationaux, de voir leurs productions et de réfléchir avec eux. Je souhaite qu'elle contribue à mettre en lumière une dynamique particulièrement innovante dont on connaît encore trop peu l'existence et la formidable ardeur.

Most of all, ISEA2000 means having the pleasure and honour of welcoming artists and intellectuals coming from around the globe to gather around the creative arts to Paris. This year, for the tenth anniversary of the event, ISEA has for its theme «revelation». For me, this word has a wealth of evocations. We will thus expect revelations, surprises and meetings between talents, both new and older and we hope that this place of exchange will fulfil the many expectations of all the participants.
In ten years time, digital technologies have been greatly developed. They are and will always be more and more a part of our daily lives. Here in Paris, we will not be dealing with these technologies in their future banality, but rather with the never banal meeting between artists and these technologies. It does not matter what we call these creations today, nor whether they are electronic, digital or multimedia. What does matter is that they come completely into the realm of artistic expression.
I find it especially fascinating that these new adventures touch and some-times blend all artistic disciplines. This closeness of digital imagery and digital sound brings about new forms and gives rise to new aesthetics. Once again, artists are in the vanguard of experimentation and innovation. Admittedly, experimentation and research are closely linked to all artistic practices, but the link seems to be even stronger when it comes down to technological creations. The mission of my ministry is to promote and sup-port the emergence of these new territories of imagination. I will see to it that the creators be better understood, better received and better supported in their projects.
ISEA2000 is one of the opportunities offered to professionals and the public to meet many international and French actors, to see their productions and to think with them. I hope it will help shine more light on a particularly innovative process whose existence and tremendous ardour we still know too little of.

Bienvenue à ISEA2000.
Après ISEA98 révolution, cette dixième édition d'ISEA s'inscrit sous le thème de la «révélation». Révélation, parce que face aux transformations d'un monde qui voit tous ses anciens repères s'effacer, il s'agit bien, au-delà du visible, de comprendre le sens profond des nouveaux enjeux qui nous gouvernent.
Le pari de tenir ISEA2000 en France fut lancé en 1998. Nous formions alors le voeu de fédérer autour de ce grand rendez-vous nomade de la communauté artistique internationale, de nombreuses initiatives à Paris et en province. Pari tenu. Ce symposium vous invite à partager les réflexions de 300 experts, ainsi qu'à découvrir la diversité de la création numérique au travers d'une programmation répartie sur plus de 30 lieux culturels.
ISEA poursuit donc avec succès son rôle d'événement multiculturel, transdisciplinaire et fédérateur. S'il permettra de dresser un «état des lieux» international, grâce à la participation d'artistes et d'experts venus de plus de 30 pays, il s'attachera à comprendre l'histoire encore naissante d'une civilisation numérique dont les technologies du «savoir» et du «vivant» auront relégué en quelques années au rang de pièces de musée les découvertes du passé. Un nouveau monde où les transgressions génétiques annoncent la fin de «l'homo sapiens» au profit de la naissance du «fils de l'homme» (en opposition au «fils de Dieu» ?). Où l'humanitarisme crée malgré lui ses propres zones d'exclusions et où l'innovation, veau d'or auto-proclamé des puissances économiques, soulève des aspirations culturelles qui, elles, se fondent sur une nouvelle quête du sens.
A défaut d'apporter des réponses, ISEA2000 permettra donc sans aucun doute de mieux comprendre les phénomènes émergents et leurs inter-relations. Et parce que plus que tout autre, l'artiste «rend visible ce que le visible ne montre pas», la création en est l'invitée de marque.
Bienvenue à ISEA2000, et souhaitons que cet événement soit pour chacun de nous, l'histoire enthousiaste d'une «révélation».

Welcome to ISEA2000.
After ISEA98 Revolution, «Revelation» embodies the theme of this tenth edition of ISEA. Revelation, because the real question when facing the transformations of a world whose references are fading away is to go beyond the visible and understand the deeper meaning of the new issues that govern us.
The bet to hold ISEA2000 in France began in 1998. At that time we were developing the desire to unify numerous initiatives in Paris and in the provinces around this large nomadic gathering of the international artistic community. Bet won. This symposium invites you to share the thoughts of 300 experts, as well as to discover the diversity of digital creation through a programme planning spread out over more than 30 cultural places.
ISEA is thus successfully keeping on its role as a unifying, interdisciplinary and multicultural event. If ISEA were able to draw up an international «appraisal», thanks to the participation of artists and experts from more than 30 countries, it would set out to understand the ever-budding history of a digital civilization whose technologies of «knowledge» and «life» will have, in only a few years, banished the past discoveries to the rank of works for museums only. A brave new world where genetic transgressions will herald the end of «Homo Sapiens» in favour of the birth of the «Son of Man» (as opposed to the «Son of God»?). Where humanitarianism creates its own zones of exclusion and where innovation - the self-proclaimed golden calf of marketing logic - raises cultural expectations which merge with a new quest for meaning.
Even if it might not bring any answers, ISEA2000 will without any doubt allow you to better understand the emerging phenomena and how they interrelate. Creation is ISEA's most distinguished guest since the artist, more than anyone else, «makes the invisible visible».
We welcome you to ISEA2000 and hope that for each and everyone of us this event wil prove to be the enthusiastic story of a «revelation».
